Grown in the lush super-volcanic soil around Lake Toba, our Sumatra Iskandar is carefully selected to insure quality. Each bean passes strict quality checks first at the smallholder farms where it's grown, and then in the city of Medan, where it's gathered for export. By the time it gets to us, each has been triple hand-sorted. The rich volcanic soil and low altitude of Indonesia combine to create a softer cup, as pungent as sweet pipe tobacco. Deep and dark, our Sumatra balances its pleasant bitterness with notes of woody spice and an incredibly thick body.

Working with Beans at Sumatra Iskandar

Sumatra's rich volcanic soil contributes to its coffee's earthy flavor.

Origin Facts

Sustainability

Fair Labor Practices All producers and collectors in Sumatra are women and most have been working in the coffee industry for 20 or 30 years, but there are also many young women who are learning the coffee trade.
Habitat Preservation Pruning is not practiced in Sumatra, which means that the trees are able to grow to their full potential of 8 to 12 ft. A lot of the shading of the fruit comes from the lush trees.
Water Conservation The coffee is hand washed in small batches and sun dried on the patio.
