'The New York Times' Has Good Coffee on the Brain
The increasing availability of better coffee is once again the subject of an article in the Times. The frequency of their recent attention to coffee leaves me hopeful but I was taken by today's curious subhead: "Beyond Starbucks: Coffee Shops
Overflow but Will Connoisseurs Pay the Price?" Do I detect a double entendre?
Is Ted Botha concerned about the price of a latte? Or is he instead worried that long-time coffee aficionados (such as himself) are at risk
of being squeezed out of the few quality obsessed outlets as more
people discover great coffee? Awareness of better coffee among consumers seems to be
increasing at a faster pace than the opening of great new shops.
This interview happened a few weeks ago, but Ted and I first met back in March at a MediaBistro soiree we hosted at Mott St. He had interesting perspectives on African coffee as a result of his having lived in South Africa and traveled on assignment to Uganda and Mozambique. Thanks for promoting awareness of the scene, Ted.
