Limescale Buildup in Espresso Machines

Hey, who left this boiler and heating element out in the snow?  Water is a key component in the espresso we all enjoy.  It makes up a necessary part of the ingredient quality that is often overlooked.

Think about a glass of water, it looks clear, tastes like there is nothing in it, so it can't possibly harm my equipment.  There can be many things in your water besides hydrogen and oxygen, as seen in living color above.  This boiler yielded 4.2lbs. of limescale.  Jim Schulman expounds on water quality at alt.coffee.
