72 Hours in Helena, MT

By Kevin Cuddeback | Sep 30, 2011

About 6 months ago we tweeted about a big Probat roaster that was listed on Craigslist in Montana. Last month it was still available, so we decided to get serious and go have a look.

We packed a few tools in our checked luggage. If it was both beauty AND beast, it was coming home in pieces.

It was located in a 125 year old building that once housed a workshop for making mining implements. Today, the exterior is looking a bit "after the gold-rush".

...But inside, something special. 60+ years old and running softly as a sewing machine. And like all antiques & collectibles, condition is key.

Up close, it was apparent that mostly it needed a good dusting. We said, "OK. We'll take it."

As we got it in pieces, we discovered some more severe dust accumulation. THAT will need to be cleaned. (No problem.)

We enjoyed a bird's-eye view of Helena's "Disfunction Junction" as we were pulling the chimney.

Within 72 hours, the project was fully wrapped.

Our final negotiation was to secure this 6' diameter table - actually an antique wooden mining form - perfect for coffee tasting. A done deal: Lock, stock and barrel.

Thank you, big sky country. 'Safe travels and 'see you at home, Probat.

Unfortunately there is no way of letting anybody know how great the water tasted and hence the beer of Lewis and Clark Brewery.
They really deserve credit for great libation in form of their Yellowstone- Kolsch style nectar of well balanced hops to malt ratio.
