By Jeff Katris | Feb 12, 2009

Joshua Sperling is a barista at our East Shore and State Street locations. He is also a talented visual artist. A few of his works are on display at State Street this month.

I walked into the cafe with a few friends the other day, and there was a collective, "Whoa, nice."

Josh's space-bending designs make a palpable impact on the cafe feel. Visual food for thought.

Here are those first 3 images in full view. Each one takes about 16 square feet of wall space. If you have a big room in your house, one of these oversized conversation pieces could add drama.

Concave #1, 2008.

It's hard to do Blockstar (2008) justice on this web page. You really need to see the 5-foot version up close and personal.

Detail view of the top portion. You can see the stars just starting to form.

Detail of the resolution at bottom. Hours of mental Tetris.

Perhaps Josh's most iconic piece, Continental US. He's going to paint it on the wall of the East Shore Skate Park in mega-mural proportions.

You can see the Sperling touch in some commercial art, such as this tour tryptich for the band Jimkata.

It's okay to stare.

Josh received a BFA with a concentration in sculpture from SUNY Potsdam. The Gibson Gallery displayed his polyethylene and paper sculpture, Geo #1, in 2006.

Now you know what Josh is seeing as he pulls your espresso shots. If you would like to contact Josh to discuss or purchase his work, email him.
