Good Food Awards Roadshow NYC

By Colleen Anunu | Nov 16, 2011

On November 12th we participated in a tasting workshop for the Good Food Awards Roadshow.

We received a Good Food Award in 2011 for our Colombia Finca San Luis, and our commitment to producing delicious, transparent and responsibly grown food.

This year we are (again) honored to be considered a finalist in the 2012 competition! Fingers crossed!

It was a great honor to have Sarah Weiner, the Director of Seedling Projects, present at the workshop to both talk about the importance of the Good Food Awards, and to participate in the tasting as well.

The workshop was hosted by Williams-Sonoma at their Columbus Circle location in the heart of Manhattan. We partnered with Williams-Sonoma in August as the featured coffee roaster in their Artisanal Coffee Program. Our Colombia Finca San Luis was featured in the top 30 Williams-Sonoma retail outlets across the country... including the Columbus Circle location, so it was great to bring our efforts together here.

We tasted our newest small lot from Finca San Luis, as well as Honduras Las PeƱitas and Mocha Java, which, respectively, exemplify citric and floral, berry and rich, malty and earthy characteristics. For introductory cupping sessions it is important to cover a range of flavor profiles so that the participants can really distinguish what they are tasting.

Participants were given a basic form to write down their impressions of what they were smelling and tasting. This is the form that we use in our free weekly public tastings.

Everyone was instructed on how professional coffee tasters assess coffee quality. They sniffed and slurped like true champs!

The discussion of impressions was encouraged. Whether we could agree that a coffee tasted like fruits or chocolate was irrelevant. Putting words to tastes was the intended goal of the workshop.

Maddy Martin, from the Whole Foods Market Cooking website, was also present at the workshop. We partnered Maddy and the Whole Foods website in September to promote a coffee recipe contest. Check out the winning recipe, which is so so delicious.

We wish the crew of the Good Food Awards Roadshow many continued successes on the remainder of their trip across the country, spreading the gospel of tasty and authentic food production!
