Working with Beans at Sumatra Iskandar

By Amina Omari | Mar 1, 2008

Coffee beans are raked out on patios to dry in the sun.

Sumatra is just one of Indonesia's many islands.

The beans are thoroughly washed to remove the pulp from the outside.

The dry beans are sorted by quality and packed into sacks.

In order to dry completely, the beans must be raked and turned over often.

Indonesia produces over a million pounds of coffee greens per year.

Sumatra's rich volcanic soil nourishes the coffee trees and contributes to the earthy flavor of the final product.

These bags will travel nearly 10,000 miles to reach their final destination.

These jade-green coffee beans are ready to be shipped.
