Gimme! staff and friends are dusting off their bikes and hitting the pavement to support the Southern Tier AIDS Program (STAP) in the annual Ride for Life. Last year, we raised over $11,000 for HIV/AIDS services and awareness in our community. This year with your help we're going to do even better.
The AIDS Ride for Life
On September 15, 2007, over 350 riders will gather to bike 50, 85, or 100 miles around Cayuga Lake. Sponsored by our community, they will be raising funds for STAP and the many people it supports.
Since 1999, the AIDS Ride for Life has:
- Raised over $800,000 to support HIV/AIDS services
- Increased community awareness about HIV/AIDS among participants and the community
- Increased awareness and knowledge about the services and programs offered by STAP
- Provided a positive, life-affirming experience for hundreds of riders, volunteers, and sponsors
All the funds raised in the AIDS Ride For Life go to the Southern Tier AIDS Program, which is the primary provider of HIV/AIDS services in the region.
It's a Biker Gang
You may have seen Team Gimme! on the road, biking between 20 and 60 miles at a time to train for the Ride. They're doing plenty of work behind the scenes, too. Cayuga Street Manager and team captain Mimi Wysong tells the team's history:
Team Gimme! was born out of necessity. Way back in 2004 Karen Cutler really wanted to do the ride but didn't think she could come up with the minimum fundraising money. She and a couple other people came up with the team idea. Team Gimme! raised the most money in 2004 and 2005. Last year Team Gimme raised over $11,000. Ann Carter (Special Events Coordinator for the Ithaca STAP office) has acknowledged Team Gimme! many times in the past as the one that started all the real buzz for the Ride. We're like the big sisters for new teams.
This year, Team Gimme! is made up of about 20 staff and loyal customers. They're putting in the elbow grease and the bike rubber but they need your help.
How You Can Help
First-time riders must raise a minimum of $300 for STAP, while veterans commit to $500 or more. To reach this goal, Team Gimme! is asking for the support of family, friends, and community. Help Team Gimme! ride 100 miles closer to a world without AIDS.
